adidas Women's 5k Challenge

Birmingham Race Report

The weather held off the adidas Women’s 5K Challenge where almost 2,000 runners took to the streets of Birmingham starting and finishing in Broad Street. Whilst this is the sixth Women’s Challenge to take place in Birmingham City this is the first event where adidas have been the title sponsor.

Maxine and the City Council Fitness team led an enthusiastic warm-up in Centenary Square before runners made their way to the starting line as they awaited the 10.30 start.

Councillor Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture and Beverly Parris, Sports Event Officer, sounded the klaxon to start this year’s adidas Women’s 5K Challenge event. Fiona Clark, student at Birmingham University took an early lead which she managed to hold for the entire race. Leading a group of five, Fiona increased her distance from them as she passed each KM marker. Fiona was closely followed by Emma Gooderham and Helen Rollins of Kettering Town Harriers.

Fiona Clark took first place in an impressive time of 16:58. Emma Gooderham took second in a time of 17:38, with a close finish by Helen Rollins who took third in 17:58.

Fiona was delighted with her time: “I’m pleased to be back at such a fun event. It is great to see so many enthusiastic runners taking part here in Birmingham. The weather was kind to us today which I used to my advantage and am delighted to take first representing Birmingham University.”

There were two other adidas Women’s 5K Challenge events taking place simultaneously today – one in Liverpool, with a similar size field to Birmingham, and one in London. Some 15,000 runners took part in the adidas Women’s 5K Challenge in London’s Hyde Park where Olympic Gold medallist Constantina Tomescu-Dita ran alongside Olympic Silver Medallist at Modern Pentathlon, Heather Fell. Christina Ohuruogu, another Gold Medallist, was a welcome addition to the VIP start list.
